If ever there was the perfect plant for the ultimate brown thumb, the easy ZZ plant is it. This virtually indestructible houseplant can take months and months of neglect and low light and still look amazing. The ZZ plant, also known as the zanzibar gem, is a low-maintenance houseplant characterized by its shiny, wide, oval-shaped leaves that shoot upward. The spotless leaves are waxy and so deep green that sometimes the plant is mistaken as artificial.

It is an excellent air purifier and will tolerate low light spaces. In a NASA study, researchers found it is specifically adept at removing copious amounts of toxins such as xylene, toluene, and benzene from the air.

ZZ Plant Tips:
  • Toxicity: All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested so it’s important to keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer (20-20-20) once a month when watering.
  • Repotting: The Zanzibar is a generally low maintenance plant which only needs to be re-potted once every few years. Clean leaves with a soft damp cloth if you find dust accumulating on them.
  • Watering: Let the soil dry out in between waterings so as to ensure the stems don’t rot, water less in the cooler months.
